Liverpool’s poor performance against Real Madrid is all everyone is going to talk about for some time now. Even though they have been out an ad about before, too, this was a little different. The situation, the circumstances, the opposition, and the players were different. The venue was also different. However, you can never really write them off.
A comeback from a deficit of 5-1 appears impossible but Liverpool needs to try. They don’t have any other choice. Either they try their hardest and grab a win. Maybe go through, or they try hard and lose the second leg. Nobody knows what is going to happen. However, the outcome appears to be very predictable. When it comes to football, nothing can be predicted. Read more »

Aston Villa are targeting three games without defeat ahead of their away game against Leeds United this weekend. The two teams will meet in the Premier League on Sunday for the first time this season. Steven Gerrard and his Villa players go into the game as the form team after securing four points from their last two league outings.
Steven Gerrard was under immense pressure to keep his job as the Aston Villa boss after a poor start to the season. His team won once and lost four of their first five games. Villa stopped their run of three straight defeats with the impressive 1-1 draw at home to holders Manchester City. Steven Gerrard got his tactics right as it secured an unlikely point against the reigning Premier League winners thanks to the strike from Jamaican star Leon Bailey after Erling Haaland had given City the lead just after the half-time break.

Steven Gerrard is targeting victory over West Ham to help quieten the critics after Villa’s stumbling start to the season. Though the campaign is not even a month old, Gerrard is aware of the scrutiny upon both himself and his team following some unconvincing performances and a return of just three points from the first three Premier League matches.
A win over the Hammers, he believes, would go a long way to altering perceptions and leave Villa in an acceptable place at the start of a testing week which also includes matches against early season table toppers Arsenal and champions Manchester City. Villa head into the match on the back of a 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Bolton which, albeit against League One opposition, was only the second time they have come from behind to claim victory since Gerrard took charge last November.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was the mastermind as Aston Villa began their pre-season schedule this summer with three wins from three games. Steven Gerrard and his Villa players played their first pre-season game this summer against hosts Walsall and it ended in a big win. The gulf in class between Aston Villa and Walsall with the Premier League team running out 4-0 winners at the end of the game played on Saturday, June 9.
Steven Gerrard reunited with his Aston Villa players for the Walsall game, which is their first since the 3-2 collapse at Premier League holders Manchester City on the final day of last season’s Premier League campaign. Villa were on course to create history by putting a dent on the Premier League title aspirations of their hosts. They had led 2-0 into the final quarter of the game before City fought back to score three goals to win the game and secure another league title in the process.

Rangers and their former manager Steven Gerrard could be heading for FIFA because of the imminent transfer of Ibrox superkid Rory Wilson. The 16-year-old striker confirmed he is leaving Rangers last month after he bagged his 49th goal of the season when he scored for Scotland Under 17s at the Euros in Israel. He is set to sign for Aston Villa on July 1 and has agreed terms, but the two clubs are poles apart in valuations and future add-ons and it’s understood Rangers have turned down a final offer from Villa, who are managed by former Ibrox boss Gerrard.
Wilson remains on an SFA registration form and he is an amateur. Because he would be signing his first professional contract with Villa, there would only be cross-border training compensation due by the Birmingham club, unless the clubs agreed on a fee, which they haven’t. Rangers have stated the player is registered until the end of the year, but it is understood that Villa and the player believe current rules are prohibitively restrictive and are confident this would be upheld by FIFA. Villa will now seek to register the player and apply for International Transfer Clearance with the English FA which would be automatically rejected by the SFA because Rangers have not accepted a fee and would dispute the player’s registration.

Aston Villa were on a run of three games without defeat before they faced Liverpool at home in a rescheduled Premier League game at Villa Park on Tuesday night. Steven Gerrard and his players were on a poor run of four straight defeats against West Ham United, Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur before the losing run was halted by the goalless draw at Leicester City towards the end of last month.
The draw with Europa Conference League semifinalists Leicester City preceded the two-game winning run recorded ahead of the Liverpool game. Steven Gerrard and his Aston Villa players ended a five-match winless run with the 1-0 home victory over bottom team Norwich City thanks to the first half strike from Ollie Watkins off the assist from fellow striker Danny Ings. Steven Gerrard and his Villa players then made it two straight wins with the impressive 3-1 win at the home of relegation-threatened Burnley. Argentine playmaker Emiliano Buendia scored one goal and assisted another goal during the game in addition to further goals from Ings and Watkins, while Ivorian substitute Maxwel Cornet was responsible for the only goal of the game for hosts Burnley.
